Home Keeping #3

I was meaning on posting my home keeping tips more often, but here are a few I've been thinking about.

Hard floors are my arch rival. Don't get me wrong, I love my wood floors, I just hate cleaning them. And with a two year old, it becomes a frequent chore. I finally deducted my enmity to the ringing out of my mop. I don't like dirty, wet floor hands and I don't like rinsing grimy mop pads out in my kitchen sink- gross. I don't have a utility sink and the bathroom sink is too small.

I've tried the Don Aslett velcro mop, which I love, but I only have one mop pad....the rinsing problem. I got a Shark Steam Mop. It's pretty cool. It is great for getting the dried up, smashed carrots and cereal up. It came with 2 pads so I was able to do half my floor with one and then finish with the other. But it doesn't slide well on my floor, (probably due to the copious amounts of maple syrup and ketchup that find their way down there) so I put off cleaning it because it is too much of workout. So my final solution for my floors: a 24 inch dust mop from Lowes for a 2 minute cleanup of the whole floor, and then the Don Aslett velcro mop with the Microfiber cloths from Costco (in the car dept.) I love those cloths. I can use as many as I want on my floor and then they go straight in the washing machine so I hardly have to touch them.

Problem Solved.

My other tip is to buy a new vacuum filter. I've had my vacuum for about 3 years and never changed it (they're like $20). But technically they should be changed every year. I finally got one and WOW the difference. I can't vacuum my rugs anymore because the suction is so strong now. When I looked in the canister after doing my family room, their was the normal fuzz, bobbi pins and Angie hair, but there was also a ton of this fine dust that made it in there. Who knows how long its been sinking into my carpet? But now it's gone. Yea!

I am so glad you posted this! I have been wondering a good floor routine. I have the Don Aslett mop--but because I have kids my floors seem way dirtier than that can handle in one shot. :) But I am too cheap to buy more mop pads--so I am intrigued with your idea to use microfiber cloths--you say you got them at Costco? I don't konw about your mop, but my mop doesn't have the velcro (they discontinued that one)--mine just has teeth that grip it. Do you think that your microfiber cloths would work without velcro? If so, I am anxious to try this out!! What a brilliant idea!

Amen to hardwood floors...love them AND hate them!
We sweep and then use a mop (that kind of sounds like something you're using). We can just take the reusable cloth thingy off and toss it in the washer. We have 2-3 of these, so while one is waiting to be washed, the other is clean and waiting to be used.
But don't come to my house expecting clean floors. That's one thing I put off WAY too long. --That's why my girls are in-training to take over! :o) Having older kids has it's benefits.

My house in Boise was hardwood and I used the Swiffer once a week and my floors were always shinny and clean. Then again, it was just me and Daniel. I like your ideas! You're the best!

p.s. I have a Dyson vacuum and I used that to clean them first. It was the best 500 dollars I've ever spent!!

Thanks for the tip Ang. I wasn't sure what I was going to use on the floors in my new house. I usually use a swiffer, which isn't cheap. I want to take care of the wood floor better. Usually I just use a vacume, or sweep (whatever's closer) and wipe little spills with the dish cloth. Then swiffer every once in a while. I'll have to look up your Don Aslett mop...
